51 Fatal Business Errors Seminar and Workshop In Tuesday, March 30, 2010, the New Jersey Chamber of Commerce along with PNC Bank will be sponsoring the “51 Fatal Business Errors Seminar and Workshop” at the Yogi Berra Museum and Learning Center on the campus of Montclair State University. The event is scheduled from 8:00 AM to 11:00 AM and is geared to owners, CEOs and presidents of small to medium sized companies in northern New Jersey. For those interested in taking their business to the next level, the seminar will provide tangible ideas on how to improve your business today and how you can become a “power CEO by working ON your business not IN it.” Jim Muehlhausen, author of 51 Errors, will lead an interactive event addressing such issues as managing employee turnover to improve your business, the critical importance of re-analyzing your business model, and the 4 ways of increasing profits. Participants will receive a free copy of Mr. Muehlhausen’s book. Admission is $75 and includes breakfast. The first 100 qualified registrants will receive free admission. Spring Clean Your Business It may not feel like it right now, but spring is right around the corner. View this time as a way to come out the winter (and hopefully) economic doldrums by preparing your business for a start fresh. Follow the suggestions below and before you know it, you will have a refreshed attitude to go with your refreshed business. Paper Files Destroy anything you don’t need. Different records require different amounts of time on file, so do your research. But if it is past its required time- shred it! This will be liberating and create space. Find out what records you can keep electronically from now on.
Electronic Files When was the last time you went through your sent mail folder? It takes only a little time to clear your sent files, sub folders and other folders and it is necessary to keep your computer running efficiently. Actually schedule an afternoon or two in your work week to complete this task.
Procedures Are your procedure files up to date? Do you have any? The process of putting procedures in place can have a great impact on your business. By thinking how you do things you can streamline many processes and can designate or outsource tasks that are simple but repetitive and take you away from important things. The process will provide a perspective of how your business operates and what takes your time away. A bonus to this is that if the decision or opportunity to sell your business arises, you will be prepared, clear and focused.
Clients How is your cash flow? Now is the time to follow up on outstanding invoices. A simple phone call is all it takes and if there is a problem it is the only way to find out. Also use this time to check your customer database. Is there anyone who needs a phone call, some nurturing or reminder that you exist? Maybe your top customers could do with a “thank you for your business” gesture?
Surroundings If you have been planning to re-vamp, re-paint or re-invent your work space then this is the time to do it. Pull out that desk and give everything the once over – including the drawers, the bookshelves and the notice - board. Maybe a new paint color would revitalize your spirits?
Business Plan Have a look at your business plan and if you don’t have one, write one. Know where you’re going and live your brand and its evolution. Business plans don’t need to be books the size of the yellow pages - just a page or two will do – as long as it is meaningful to you.
Cleaning out your entire business may be something that is just too daunting to deal with – if that is the case, book regular, shorter appointments with yourself and move through the list state by stage. You will feel better, more in control and definitely more organized. Once you have cleared the clutter, who knows what the future will bring?
Good Luck and Happy Spring!
